Weekday edition, Sunday 4 October 2026

Breezy and damp Monday and Tuesday morning. Wednesday is the walk day. Rain returns Thursday afternoon.

Monday starts bright but cloud and rain spread east, with a blustery south-westerly on the tops and drizzle on the southern and western fells. Tuesday is wet through the morning, then clears from the north-west to sunny spells and showers. Wednesday is the pick: sunny spells, a few showers and a fresher north-westerly, with MWIS calling the middle of the week colder and calmer. Thursday has a bright start before rain arrives in the afternoon. Keep high plans modest; the valleys are the better bet for most of the week.

Sunset 6.38pm on Monday, 6.33pm on Wednesday, 6.31pm on Thursday. Full mountain forecast (Mountain Weather Information Service)

A week of good talks, from moths in Kirkby Stephen to a forgotten Carlisle riot, with Wednesday kept free for a walk. Evenings bring Mozart on screen, folk in Keswick and the moon after dark in Carlisle Cathedral.

Walk of the week

Tarn Hows circuit

  • 3.3km (2 miles) round the tarn
  • About 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Start: Tarn Hows main car park (National Trust), near Hawkshead LA22 0PW

Wednesday looks like the brightest, calmest day of the week, and Tarn Hows is at its best with the woods turning and a view across to the Langdale Pikes and Coniston fells. The path is smooth compact stone for most of the way, there are plenty of benches, and there are toilets at the main car park. The National Trust lends an all-terrain mobility scooter for free if you ring ahead on 07919 111620.

There are some short rougher stretches with steeper slopes, up to 1 in 5 in places, so take it steady on the far side. The lanes up from Hawkshead and Coniston are narrow. The 505 bus stops at Hawkshead Hill, about 1.4km away.
